In May 1959, Chaville was twinned with the former Friern Barnet Urban District Council. Twinning was encouraged by the government in the 1950s to revive community spirit in Europe and the link with Chaville was probably a result of this initiative. Chaville has greatly changed since those early days of twinning. It has acquired many new buildings whilst retaining the charm of its setting in a valley bordered by extensive woods on either side. A major change came about when the new London Borough of Barnet was created in 1964. This had the result of making the English twin much larger than the French: while the population of Chaville was 18,000, Barnet was home to 300,000 residents. Chaville, a suburb of Paris 13km from the centre, has a rich history. It was first given its name in 820AD. The town built up around the chateau named Chaville which has had a strong link throughout its existence with the French Royal family and the French nobility.
