2010 in High Barnet Eight Guided Walks

Im starting the tours
this year with a Battle of Barnet walk on Sunday Sunday
January 24th at 11am. Were meeting at the usual place
the junction of the Great North Rd and Hadley Green Rd, by the old Cyma Garage
and Pizza Express. Thats followed by a walk in two parts on
February 7th and 14th High Barnet and Monken
Hadley. These walks all cost £7.

On Sunday January 31st Im doing a free walk for
Walk London. Its from River Walkway outside City Hall
(tube: London Bridge) to the Tate Modern, crossing two bridges and walking
through the Square Mile: a marvellous route (they chose it). Its part
of the Jubilee Walkway, and Ill be doing it at 10.30am and again at
2.30pm. It should last about two and a half hours.
Do come if you can
make it, and bring friends along. Its completely free and open to all.
Looking a long way ahead, our slightly revised Xmas plans have enabled
me to add a Christmas walk with a special Christmassy flavour! I hope to
see you before then.
The Battle of
Barnet Explore the famous battlefield of 1471. Step back in
time to 1471. See how the course of English history was changed on this
misty Easter Sunday morning. Hear about the first known 'friendly fire'
incident in English history. Sun Jan 24th 11am, Sun

Things That Go Bump in
High Barnet A ghostly, ghoulish walk through High Barnet and Monken Hadley.
See the pirate's grave. Hear stories of witchcraft and grisly
executions. Suitable for adults and children, and anyone who likes to have
the life scared out of them. For Halloween, there is a prize for the spookiest
costume! Friday March 12th, Saturday May 1st,
Saturday July 10th, Sunday July 25th, Saturday Sep 11th, Fri 29th/Sat 30th/Sun
31st Oct. (Halloween: prize for spookiest costume!). All at 7.30pm.
Meet outside High Barnet tube station.

'A Stroll through Smithfield (including St Paul's Cathedral, Old Bailey and

High
Barnet to Cockfosters This one will keep you fit! A mainly
rural stroll across fields and Monken Hadley Common, taking in some stupendous
scenery, a beautiful lake, and some spectacular views of Canary Wharf, 15 miles
away. Sunday May 23rd, Sunday July 18th, Sunday Oct
3rd. All at 2.30pm Meet outside High
Barnet tube station.
The Heart
of High Barnet A historical walk through High Barnet. See the
brewery that became a town hall and a church that became a shopping centre.
Marvel at some truly beautiful old houses and almshouses. Hear about a
fair that was so famous that Cossacks flocked to it, and so infamous that the
Victorians tried to close it down. Sunday May 10th
and August 23rd at 2pm. Meet outside
Barnet College, Wood Street, High Barnet.

A Meander through
Monken Hadley A historical walk through beautiful, unspoilt, Georgian
Monken Hadley. This lovely village has some of the finest
eighteenth-century houses in the country, lived in by some of the most famous
names in English literature. This walk starts at the spot where the
previous walk finishes, taking up the story from there.

Hooray For
Hendon A thousand glorious years From the Domesday Book to
Hendon Aerodrome and beyond. Sunday March 7th 11am,
Sunday June 13th 2.30pm, Sunday Nov 7th 11am. Meet outside Hendon Central tube station.
East Barnet
Village A historical walk through ancient and modern East Barnet.
See where a female heir to the throne was held prisoner, before
escaping dressed as a man. Stroll down the ghost's promenade, and take a walk
on the spooky side. Hear about the great houses that once covered this
quiet rural spot, and the great men who stayed there, including a Poet Laureate
and the founder of one of the most famous museums in the world.

 1000 years of the history of Finchley Central
and East Finchley An ancient road links two ancient villages.
Along the way, you'll see lands once owned by the Knights Templar, and a
former manor house which is haunted by a suspected lover of Anne Boleyn.
You'll hear about two famous murders, and three world-famous comedians who
lived in the area. Sunday March 21st 11am, Sunday
July 4th 2.30pm, Sunday Nov 14th 2.30pm
Meet outside Finchley Central tube station, Ballards Lane Exit.
