SEVERAL NEW
SOCIETIES Joining in BBAC's Drama Competition has means that the
adjudicator had to travel deep into Hertfordshire this spring as well as across
North London. Each of the ten plays are given a detailed written
adjudication by Charles Evans which encourages all to maintain high standards.
It's well worth seeing these productions where there is such fierce
competition for the awardeds at the prizegiving in June.
A
BOOST TO THE BULL THEATRE Is the realignment of the seating in
the main theatre upstairs to give more knee room to members of the audience,
plus a flexible set-up for the stage to allow for an orchestra pit or dance
space. The theatre, which has also had air conditioning installed, is
available for booking in the evenings and weekends, while the full time Theatre
School (SETS) has the use of these good quality facilities in the weekdays
during term time. The school is now offering Acting Classes for Children
and Adults who want to find professional work in theatre and TV. You can
sample the new theatre by coming along to the Poetry prizegiving on 13th March
for readings by the judges and the 2010 winners, or by visiting Katalyst's "The
Reduced Shakespeare Company"
17th - 20th March and other shows.

THE CORE STRATEGY FOR THE BOROUGH, Published as
a draft in November, asked for comments by 11th January 2010. BBAC
suggested additional policies on behalf of member societies to emphasise the
importance of buildings which can be licensed for public performance, as the
strategy discussed only community or leisure (ie sports} facilities. It is
understood that all comments will be published for further discussion in the
coming months. A new strategic arts alliance has been set up between
Barnet, Enfield and Haringey who have issued the excellent
ARTS MAP OF NORTH LONDON which is available in
libraries. Enfield Borough Council have already published a comprehensive
draft strategy for arts and culture in their Borough and this has been brought
to the attention of LB Barnet by BBAC.
NEWS IS
RECEIVED Of the death of two stalwarts in the Borough. Roy
Budden founded the Capriol Symphony Orchestra, the Hendon String Orchestra and
Hampstead Garden Opera (see their website). Grahame Hutchings was a local
historian and Chairman of the Friends of Church Farmhouse Museum 1985 - 2003
and worked ceaselessly in the Hendon and Cricklewood area to impove facilities.
